A Consuming Fire-February 24, 2026

COME FASTING

SCRIPTURE
Come fasting and weeping, sorry for your sins!
Change your life, not just your clothes.

-Joel 2:12b-13a (MSG)

We don't like to do without things. We live in a culture that pushes getting more in every category we can think of.

But the call to the cross is to set something aside that our heart does not need, in order that we may grow. God invites us to get rid of whatever makes it hard to hear what God is saying, whether that's an appetite, a habit, an action, a relationship, or an attitude. We call this fasting. Lent is a good time to get used to living without something we don't need. We replace what we remove with something we need even more--time with God.

In our contemporary mindset, we think more about multitasking than reducing. However, God doesn't call us to get more done. He calls us to accomplish the right things. We need to listen to the voice that brings God's peace. We need this time to clear the clutter and listen to God better.

Although there will always be busy seasons, life should never be characterized as one busy season after another. Fasting makes time for the God who always makes time for us. Fasting helps us return to unforced and uncomplicated time with God, where he has more to say than we do.
