DON'T FORGET
SCRIPTURE
You forget the LORD your Maker, who stretches out the heavens and who lays the foundations of the earth.
-Isaiah 51:13a
How often does someone remind us: Don't forget the milk, your lunch, to pick up the kids, or some other task? Do reminders sear the instruction in special memory cells of our brains? Not unless we do something like write a note, set an alarm, or take care of the issue immediately. We are prone to forget if we don't do something that will help us remember.
Isaiah is full of reminders to the people of God who were exiled because of what they forgot. They forgot who God called them to be. They forgot how to live in God's way. Forgetting made them complain. Forgetting made them entitled. Forgetting created a distance that God never wanted.
Did you know the word "remember" is used more than 1,200 times in the Bible? God knows we need reminding, He is diligent about keeping his truth before us. But we forget. We get busy or distracted or tired. We complain that our brains don't hold enough. Yet science tells us that our brains are underused.
We need a daily dose of remembering who God is, what he is doing for us, and what he wants from us. We must remember we are not self-made. We were created for a purpose. Most of all, we were made for a relationship with God. Pleasing him first is a good way to remember what he wants in other areas of our lives. God invites us to remember him so we stay ready to hear his encouragement, direction, warning, and love.
Don't forget who God is and who he wants to be in your life. Be specific. Be eager. Be his. Then forgetting will be harder than trying to remember.
BURNING QUESTIONS
1. How will you remember to live in God's way in this generation and culture?
2. How does remembering God as your Maker and Sustainer remove your need to complain?
AFFIRMATION
As I remember who God is and what he has done for me, I will enjoy a deeper relationship with him.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Lord of perfect memory, help me remember who you are and whose I am.
