LETTING GO
SCRIPTURE
So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
-1 Peter 5:6-7 (NLT)
One morning I was listening to a piano solo on my music app. The melody called to me. Usually, I don't pay attention to song titles, but something about the gentle runs and rhythm of this particular song had me looking for more information. I looked at the title: "Letting Go." It was my invitation for that morning. I leaned my head back, closed my eyes, and listened.
"What do I need to let go of?" I asked God. Don't ask if you don't want to know. Immediately the list rolled in front of me. There were concerns about our daughter's vision loss, my professional future, all the changes of the past year, and the changes that waited in the future. All were things I couldn't control or plan for.
Let it go. That's when I knew it wasn't the music speaking. It was God speaking my heart language. Let it go. I've got this. All of it. l've got you. I've got here. I've got tomorrow. Just let go.
Then I realized how much I carried unnecessarily. Fear, no matter how logical, does not lead to trust. Trust is possible when it's anchored in the unchanging, unfailing, all-knowing, and securing power of God. With a couple of sighs, I did it. First in my head, then in my heart.
There is no permanent "let go" trick or formula. We all need reminders. However, the best reason for letting go is what waits on the other side of surrender: God's heart-stilling peace is my security system, and worry is the intruder to be arrested. When we are ready to do anything for his peace, we will let go of anything that prevents it. Is today your day to let go?
BURNING QUESTIONS
1. What do you carry that you need to let go of?
2. How can you make surrendering to God your doorway to peace?
AFFIRMATION
I have peace when I know that God can handle my concerns better than I can carry them.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
God of true peace, help me put my worries in your capable hands today.
